The U-Th-Pb and the Rb-Sr systematics of various inclusions and the matrix in the Allende carbonaceous chondrite are studied in order to obtain a concordant age relation between U-Pb and Rb-Sr dating methods, to obtain an 'internal Pb-Pb isochron' of the inclusions, to determine if the internal isochron is older than the Pb-Pb age of the matrix, and to determine whether the 'primordial' Pb isotopic composition of the Canyon Diablo troilite is compatible with the Pb isotopic compositions of the inclusions. The Orgueil carbonaceous chondrite is studied for U-Th-Pb systematics in order to compare its initial lead with that of the Canyon Diablo troilite. Among the main conclusions are that: (1) the initial lead in Orgueil, corrected for in situ U-decay, is more radiogenic than that in Canyon Diablo, (2) the Rb-Sr data on the Allende inclusions indicate a recent disturbance of the Rb-Sr system, (3) the Pb data on the Allende inclusions define an isochron which yields an age of about 4.553 billion years, (4) this isochron age corresponds to the time of agglomeration if the lead in the inclusions reached isotopic equilibrium at that time, and (5) the initial lead isotopic composition of the two carbonaceous chondrites is slightly different from that of the troilite.
