Against the background of its smooth brightness variations, the peculiar object HM Sge displays rapid flares with a characteristic time of several days and an amplitude up to 0.4 mag. During these short flares the color indices of the star remain practically constant. The H-alpha emission-line profile exhibits an asymmetric central peak and broad wings. Possible similarities between HM Sge and Wolf-Rayet stars, planetary nebulae, and the peculiar object V1016 Cygni are discussed briefly.
