A statistical method based on the unnormalized pair counts of objects was used in an attempt to detect large-scale structures in the galaxy distribution. Tests using numerical simulations and data samples indicate that the method is useful in detecting typical scales in the large-scale structure. The method was applied to various deep samples of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Results are presented and discussed. Several common typical scales were found and it is concluded that the presence of large characteristic scales in the initial density spectrum favors a top-down sequence of structure formation.
