Two-dimensional observations of type III burst sources obtained at 169 MHz with a time-resolution of better than 1 s are presented. Above the solar limb as well as at any other longitude, most of the type III sources are resolved into multiple components. The structureless sources are always of small diameter, i.e., 3 arcmin or less. These results lead to an upper limit of source broadening due to wave propagation effects. The angular width of the electron injection region is found to reach frequently 35 deg or more. The implications of these results on the interpretation of interplanetary type III burst observations are briefly discussed.
