A model of type II supernova outburst is proposed that is based on the hypothesis of two successive explosions, the second explosion being much stronger than the first one. The model can explain the behaviour of subsystems of relatively narrow lines observed in spectra of some type II supernovae. The model is applied to the supernova SN 1983k in NGC 4696, for which the time interval between the explosions is estimated to be 1 - 2 months. The first explosion may be produced by a relatively weak shock wave appearing due to perturbation of stellar structure in the course of gravitational collapse of the central core, whereas the second explosion may be a result of the transport of energy from the new-born neutron star to the presupernova envelope.
