This paper discusses the use of Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) as cosmological distance indicators. A brief historical review of the observations leading to the discovery of the luminosity vs. decline rate relation is given, followed by a discussion and comparison of five methods used for determining luminosity corrections, dust reddenings, and distances from UBVRI light curves. Finally, the significant advantages offered by near-IR photometry for more precise distance determinations of SN Ia are highlighted.
