We analyze the SDSS-II type Ia supernova (SN Ia) light curves for evidence of the shock produced when an exploding white dwarf collides with its binary companion. Kasen (2009, arXiv:0909.0275) has modeled the effect and predicts that the shock should be visible in approximately 10% of SN Ia exploding through the single degenerate channel. If the viewing angle is favorable, the shock will contribute significant flux between 8 hours and 5 days after explosion and its maximum brightness depends upon the separation of the binary system. Kasen predicts that the amplitude of the shock emission ranges from about 10% of peak SN flux (white dwarf companion) to 100% of peak flux (red giant companion). A preliminary analysis of the SDSS-II light curves using the 2-stretch fitting method shows no obvious detection of an early shock in any of the 105 individual supernovae with good early light curves. However, it is important to place a statistically significant lower limit on the amplitude of the effect given the sample's cadence and photometric properties. We perform a deep statistical analysis of the SDSS-II SN Ia light curves, and compare the results to simulated light curves that include varying amplitude and decay times of the shock emission. The results constrain the range and relative fractions of possible progenitors of SN Ia.
