The division of pulsars into two classes is investigated, and the observed differences between the parameters of these classes of pulsars are examined. Differences are found between short-period and long-period pulsars in the observed dependence of the width of the mean profile on the period, the variation of the position angle along the profile, and in a number of other properties. It is concluded that these observations can be explained by adopting the polar cap model for long-period pulsars and Smith's model for those with short periods.
