Two dual-channel photometers have been constructed which enable the simultaneous observation of a rapid variable star and a nearby comparison star under conditions of variable atmospheric transparency. Photometer design is based on that of the McDonald Observatory high-speed photometer, with an on-axis main channel of standard design and a second channel consisting of a miniature photometer riding on the offset-guider stage. During observations, sky background measurements are taken periodically by briefly moving the telescope of the two stars, allowing the subtraction of sky contributions to each data point; the effects of extinction and variations in sky transparency are then removed from the sky-subtracted channel-one data by dividing by comparison star data. Data obtained under a variety of observing conditions at the Louisiana State University Observatory and at Kitt Peak National Observatory has demonstrated that precision high-speed photometry can be obtained under nonphotometric conditions with the two-star photometer.
