New cataclysmic variables of the intermediate polar type have been discovered with ROSAT. Most of them show hard PSPC spectra consistent with intrinsically absorbed thermal bremsstrahlung, as was seen from intermediate polars known before the launch of ROSAT. However the X-ray spectrum of a new class of sources is dominated by a very soft, little absorbed blackbody-like component with temperatures kT in the range of 40-60 eV, somewhat higher than typically found for polars. ROSAT spectra from members of both classes are presented. The similarities of the new soft intermediate polars to polars at the lower end of their magnetic field strength distribution suggest that they are progenitors of polars which have not yet synchronized orbital and white dwarf rotation.
