A pronounced absorption feature has been detected in the emission spectrum of the weak extended X-ray source at the Galactic Center, in the 8-11 keV energy range. This, in conjunction with the changing spatial distribution, suggests that the high-energy emissions are due to X-ray scattering from nearby compact sources by dense molecular clouds. The softer X-ray emissions can still be seen as thermal emission from a plasma whose temperature need not be unreasonable high, in view of the lack of a comparable absorption feature at lower energies.
