Scientific paper

A simplified version of speckle interferometry, requiring only two
photomultipliers, is proposed and shown experimentally to be feasible.
The instrument is described; it has been used to observe five close
binary stars with the 125-cm telescope. The shortcomings and possible
applications of the method are pointed out.
