A model for extragalactic radio jets is proposed which takes into account two different flows of particles, a beam of relativistic particles (believed to be responsible for the VLBI parsec-scale jet and the observed superluminal motion) and a classical or mildy relativistic wind (related to the large jet observed on the scale of several kiloparsecs). The mutual interaction of these flows is studied, along with their interaction with any ambient plasma or radiation field. The model simplifies the problem of jet formation, because only a very small fraction of electrons and positrons must reach the bulk Lorentz factor required to explain the superluminal motion.
