Recent calculations of the effects of rotational distribution functions on two-colour diagrams in the Johnson system are compared with observations selected from the existing literature. It is found that the two are in reasonable qualitative agreement but that extreme differential rotation seems to be ruled out. Quantitatively, the observed photometric effects are larger than the calculated ones by a factor of about 2 and are too uncertain to distinguish between the predictions of solid-body and moderately differential rotation.
