Interest in the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability has recently grown in astrophysics because it may cause a mixing of materials in SN 1987A. This paper clearly demonstrates the different behavior of the RT instability in two and three dimensions. It is shown that mushroom structure due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in three dimensions is much smaller than that in two dimensions and hence the nonlinear growth is faster in three dimensions. This difference cannot be explained by linear analysis.
