About 50 pictures of comet Halley, taken by Vega-1 and Vega-2 spacecraft during the approach from 500 to 8 thousand km, have been subjected to thorough multistage processing. The main processing stages were designed to solve the following tasks: image restoration and noise reduction, nucleus region detection, nucleus shape and size evaluation, jet extraction, surface structure enhancement. The results of the successive procedures for the image restoration and the noise removal (in the brightness and spatial-frequency domain) are given. Different approaches and the algorithms concerned for the nucleus region detection, the identification of the limbs which have not been obscured with the jets are described. Taking into consideration a set of located limb edges the nucleus shape and size are evaluated. The texture enhancement of the nucleus surface is proposed and discussed.
