The turbulent transport of heat and momentum is studied for mercury flow in a vertical pipe. Measured turbulent transport of heat and momentum results are presented. In addition, interdependencies of the turbulent flow components and the turbulent transport structure are investigated using calculated statistical properties. These results indicate the marked difference in the nature of thermal transport in low Prandtl number fluids compared with that in other fluids. They also indicate that significant contributions to total transport span wide ranges in wave-number and that a large portion of the transport occurs in low wave-number (large scale) inhomogeneous regions. A calculation technique which is capable of predicting radial turbulent heat fluxes in low-Prandtl number fluids is developed.
