The transition from laminar magnetospheric convection to the turbulent-flow regime is examined. The transition occurs as the convection velocity exceeds a certain threshold value and is accompanied by the excitation of small-scale eddy currents in the form of finite-amplitude Alfven waves. The energy characteristics of the turbulent convection are analyzed. It is shown that the transition to turbulent flow has an explosive character, which may be connected with arc activation and the commencement of the explosive substorm phase.
