Measurements of the vertical profile of ozone in the Arctic during January and early February in 1990 indicated episodes of near-complete ozone destruction beneath temperature inversions in the first few kilometers above the surface. Total column NO2 was found to correlate negatively with the ozone mixing ratio at 1 +/- 0.5 km altitude during most of the period. These results are investigated in terms of the expected chemistry and it is concluded that reaction of ozone with NO(x) pollutants, in the presence of limited sunlight, followed by heterogeneous processes involving NO3 can explain the ozone losses. These results suggest that tropospheric ozone depletion, in association with the 'Arctic haze' phenomenon, may be a more prominent feature of the Arctic than previously appreciated.
