A review and analysis of Mars expedition transportation and operations was conducted. This paper summarizes findings of the review and analysis. Design of a human Mars mission involves the choice of mission profile and the choice of interplanetary propulsion system(s). There are two basic mission profiles, each with many variations. Five propulsion options are available: cryogenic rocket engines, aerobraking and aerocapture, nuclear thermal propulsion, and nuclear or solar electric propulsion. A mission might use planetary resources, e.g. for propellant. The choices of profile and propulsion are influenced by several 'mission drivers'. For any mission and program scenario, there will be a least cost engineering solution to the problem of getting to Mars and back. This will normally be the solution of choice, although factors relating to future evolution of the project may also influence the choice.
