The optical properties of three gold transmission gratings with different wire thicknesses are investigated in the 50-250 A range. A model for which a trapezoidal wire cross section is assumed, and which involves the interference of the attenuated and phase-shifted waves coming through the wire and the unattenuated waves coming through the opening, is used to explain the observations.
