Observations of modulated optical emission with a period of about 83 msec from Cyg X-1 are reported which constitute evidence of strong emission at optical wavelengths from the X-Ray source in the Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 system. The light curve of one event, which lasted about 10 min, is analyzed, and data are given for three other events that occurred one month later and lasted for a total of about 1 hour. The analyzed light curve is shown to have a very regular structure, and the periodicity is found to have been caused by falls of intensity with a duty cycle near 25%. The luminosity of the modulated emission is estimated to be between 10 to the 35th power and 10 to the 36th power erg/sec. It is suggested that this optical emission is generated by instabilities arising in a rather limited region of the accretion disk at a distance of a few hundred kilometers from the black holes. An alternative possibility is noted where the emission is associated with a rotating body in a triple star system.
