Emden found that for a perfect material gas, the transformations along the isochor, the adiabat, the isotherm and the isobar are all forms of the general polytropic transformation λ=dQdT=const. An alternative definition of a polytrope is Γ=-(dpp)(dvv)=const. When radiation energy density and pressure are considered, it is found that λ is a constant only on the adiabat, and Γ only on the isobar. A discussion follows concerning the relation of these results to certain polytropic distributions of interest in astrophysics.
