A computing scheme based on multiple application of the unperturbed problem of two bodies (the Laplace method) is used to show that close encounters of minor bodies with terrestrial planets can result in the formation of short-period orbits in the inner solar system. It is suggested that Geminid- and Arietid-type meteor streams and at least some Amor- and Apollo-type asteroids may be of cometary origin.
