The transfer of gamma rays is studied by means of numerically stable method that yields all emergent intensities as well as the energy converted to heat. The analysis is based on a medium with Compton-scattered high-energy-line photons, and a redistribution function is generated to describe the correlations between the angles and energies of the incoming and the outgoing photons. The angle x energy space is discretized to transform the radiative transfer equation into a system of differential equations with boundary conditions. Emergent intensities and the energy converted into heat are determined by solving the equations with the discrete-ordinate-matrix-exponential method. Results are given for a plane-parallel medium consisting of cold electrons that is irradiated by gamma-line photons, and the radiation fields are derived.
