Analytical evaluations have recently been completed that suggest a rate of polar wandering comparable to that of continental drift. While the most thorough of the previously published studies indicated only 5 deg of wander during the last 90 million years, the new analyses indicate a sudden polar shift of 10-15 deg 70-100 million years ago. The cause of such polar wander, while as yet unknown, must have involved the redistribution of mass on or within the planet. On the basis of correlations between a record of polar wander and the frequency and duration of magnetic reversals, some researchers have hypothesized that the transfer of heat from the uppermost core to the lowermost mantle leads to periodic episodes of activity in the core and mantle.
