An account is given of the development of the breadboards for the incoming laser beam tracking sensor which generates pointing-mechanism control signals in a satellite optical communications system. This 14 x 14-pixel CCD houses electronics for CCD drive signals, output buffering, and amplification. The electronics unit incorporated conducts video signal processing in order to ascertain the coarse position of the spot over the 14 x 14-pixel area, and then proceeds to determine a high-accuracy position over the central 2 x 2-pixel area by means of an algorithm that is executed by a microprocessor. Performance results are presented.
