Modal noise in high resolution (R > 105) spectra may be removed by using single mode instead of multi-mode fibres with the larger (factor >2) core sizes of large mode area (LMA) single-mode photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) more attractive than traditional, step index, fibres. Coupling into single-mode fibres is governed by the form of the incident electric field instead of the usual time averaged intensity when feeding multi-mode fibres and some of the problems unique to coupling into a single mode are discussed in this paper.
