With the support of the Solar-Terrestrial Program of National Science Foundation, we are currently carrying out a project to digitize 26 years' film observations (1969-1995) at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). The total number of H-alpha images with pixel resolution of 1 arc second is estimated to be 10 million. Despite some limitations of the film data format, the long-term coverage and high quality of the BBSO data with a nominal cadence of 1 minute will have broad applications for statistical as well as morphological studies. We will present and analyze sample digitized full-disk as well as high-resolution H-alpha images. In addition to the effort of restoring historical H-alpha data, we are currently operating the Global H-alpha Network (GHN), which is an international collaboration synthesizing data from nine observing stations for round-the-clock monitoring of solar activity. The entire set of full-disk film data will eventually be combined with more recent data from GHN to create a comprehensive synoptic database, comprising valuable information of solar filaments and flares spanning a period of 4 solar cycles. Using these data, we are carrying out statistical and case studies of flares, filaments and their eruptions, filament oscillations, new flux emergence, as well as solar cycle variation of solar activity and differential rotation.
These works are supported by NSF grants ATM 08-49453 and 08-39216.
