A technique for computing total O3 from satellite IR-radiance measurements is demonstrated using data from the high-resolution IR sounder of the TOVS aboard NOAA-6; the results are compared with Dobson-spectrophotometer measurements made at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP) at Mt. Chiran during the French Intercomparison Ozone Campaign in June, 1981. Surface temperature and mean O3 temperature are estimated from the radiance at 11, 13.3, 7.3, 14.9, and 9.6 microns, and combined with the 9.6-micron radiance via a radiative-transfer equation (corrected for the effects of water vapor and line-of-sight angle) to calculate O3 transmittance, which is then calibrated to total O3 by linear regression from a set of Dobson O3 data from eight European stations in June, 1981. The TOVS transmittance data for the OHP zone are processed using the derived regression coefficients, and the results are shown to be in good agreement (S.E. less than 5 percent) with the Dobson values. Sample maps showing time and spatial variations are presented.
