A complete topological study of the Lane-Emden equation is performed in terms of Milne's homology-invariant variables for the cases of principal practical interest: N = 1 (polytropic slabs), N = 2 (polytropic cylinders), and N = 3 (polytropic spheres). Several improvements and extensions in comparison with Kimura's (1981) work are made. The integral curves are calculated quantitatively for selected typical polytropic indices, and connections with previous work summarized by Chandrasekhar (1939) are made throughout.
