The effects of projection upon the usefulness of 2D topological statistics are investigated. The deep Lick galaxy catalog is modeled with a lognormal density field. It is found that, despite 'washing out' effects, the projection of a 3D lognormal field has a topology that looks very similar to that for for a 2D lognormal field. On intermediate scales, these models provide a good fit to the Lick topology as measured by CP91 using the Euler-Poincare characteristic. The usefulness of shallower depth angular galaxy catalogs for topological studies is assessed.
