Axisymmetric aspheric optical surfaces deviating from conicoids are becoming more common due to their significant optical design advantages. Their practical use is being further enabled by ever-improving manufacturing and metrology methods. In order to effectively utilize such surfaces, tolerances must be applied that tie the manufacturability of the aspheric component to the optical design. In this paper tolerancing of aspheric surfaces in orthogonal bases, specifically Forbes aspheres, is covered. The significant advantages of such an orthogonal representation are highlighted and reinforced with an example.
