The characteristics of the Titan atmosphere are discussed and compared with the conditions of the prebiotic earth. Ground-based and Voyager observations of the Titan atmosphere are reviewed and the temperature profile of the Titan atmosphere is described. The chemical compositions of the Titan stratosphere and troposphere are examined, noting the organic molecules that might be present. The possible existence of oceans on the Titan surface is considered. It is suggested that many of the conditions required for the development of a prebiotic chemistry are present on Titan.
