Measurements of the asymmetry of the emission feature in the core of the CaII K line have been made for a sample of thirty-one field red giants whose B-V's are close to Stencel's 'dividing line' (1978). The asymmetry of the CaII K line is quantified by the V/R parameter of Wilson (1976), classified as V/R > 1, V/R = 1,and V/R < 1, according to how the peak flux in the violet emission compares with the peak flux in the red emission. We explore the temporal variability in the asymmetry of the Ca II K line and the impact that it makes on the definition of the 'dividing line'. We also conduct a similar asymmetry analysis of the Ca II H line and find some inconsistent results to the the Ca II K line analysis. This project was completed in ten weeks during the McDonald Observatory REU and was supported under NSF AST-0649128.
