The discovery more than 30 years ago ofthe unique superlong anabiosis phenomenon(deep sleep/dormancy) for ancientmicroorganisms buried in Antarctic icedeposits created the experimental and theoreticalbasis for the fields of cryomicrobiologyand astrobiology, related to searching forlife or its evidence in the universe. This discoveryis of special interest in light of theupcoming International Polar Year (IPY2007-2008) and the creation of the U.S. SubglacialAntarctic Lake Environments program(http://salepo.tamu.edu/us_sale).
