The boundary value problem resulting from the unsteady expansion of a nonuniform mass into a nonuniform atmosphere as reported by Grundy and McLaughlin (1977) have a vast time solution and is of importance in astrophysical problems. The assumption is that the gas is perfect or ideal; however, when the atmosphere does not obey the perfect gas law, the drag coefficient and the specific impulse are affected. The note analyzes how the nonideal gas parameter influences the piston positioning while the strong shock moves into a nonuniform atmosphere.
