Mechanisms involving a combination of light travel time and radial flow effects are presented which may account for the observed asymmetries in the narrow forbidden O III emission line profiles of quasars and active galactic nuclei. Under the assumption that the narrow lines are formed by emission from steadily accreting material in free fall, two cases are considered. In the first case the narrow line region consists of optically thick clouds that emit line radiation monochromatically, isotropically and in inverse proportion to the square of the distance from the center of the system. In the second case, the material is assumed to be homogeneous, isothermal and to have the same ionization structure everywhere. Calculations of line profiles for various epochs after radiation outburst, continuum decay times and spectral resolutions are presented which are clearly asymmetric to the blue of profile peak and, for some combinations, asymmetric to the blue of line center, as in many observed profiles.
