The time-dependent diffusion of elements in chemically peculiar stars determines what kind of abundance stratification can be built in these stars and, therefore, what kind of peculiarities may be expected according to the age of observed stars. The author proposes a method for computing this time-dependent diffusion for an element being simultaneously in several states of ionization. The method takes into account the non-linearities due to the interaction of the diffusing ions with the radiation field in an optically thick medium. As an example, the author applies his method to the diffusion of manganese in a star having an outer convection zone.
