In principle, natural guide stars are \underbar¬ required to sense overall wavefront tilt across a telescope aperture caused by seeing. We propose a multi-color laser beacon. The general concept is to make the atmosphere produce a second beacon of a different color at altitude. Two mechanisms capable of producing the color conversion are Raman scattering and resonant fluorescence. The wavefront tilt can be inferred by measuring the differential wavefront tilt between the two beacons caused by dispersion.
