A meteor radar on Ascension Island (8S, 14W), has been used to measure tides and planetary waves at heights between 80 and 100 km, over the interval Oct 2001 and Oct 2002. Both the 12- and 24- hour tides display dramatic variability in amplitude, which often occurs on characteristic timescales of a few days. Variability of this sort has sometimes been attributed to interaction with planetary waves. Here we quantify the equatorial planetary-wave field and the nature of the observed tidal variability, including equinoctial transitions. Quasi-periodic components of the variability are compared to oscillations in the planetary-wave field, and in some cases these are interpreted in terms of non-linear interactions between tides and planetary waves.
