A normal star will lose its hydrostatic equilibrium and break up if it encounters a massive black hole at an impact parameter comparable with the tidal radius of the hole. The tides will cause the star to expand irreversibly. The process would be observed as a thermal flare, and could be used as a tool to reveal massive black holes in the nuclei of the galaxies in the Local Supercluster (if such holes exist at all) or to set an upper limit on their mass.
