The authors report on preliminary results from simulations of the tidal breakup of "rubble pile" asteroids by the Earth and Moon. They find that both bodies can disrupt 2 g cm-3 asteroids and the outcome depends on various adjustable factors, including the encounter distance and velocity. The results of the completed study will have implications for the origins of such geological features as crater chains.
