Three-dimensional models of the U-shaped equipotential structures above auroral arcs are discussed. Cold plasma convects into the structure along equipotential surfaces. Electrons are lost through precipitation. Current continuity is maintained by the generator which injects electrons and removes ions against the perpendicular electric field. The nature of the parallel electric field is discussed. It is shown that observations are inconsistent with a uniformly distributed parallel electric field and with a single strong double layer. The multitude of weak double layers and solitons seen on the S3-3 satellite agrees with known facts.
