A model of evolution for the western segment of the Alpine chain is presented. Available data concerning the structural, metamorphic and geochronological evolution in the major units involved in the thickening processes are taken into account to constrain the model. The successive stages of the collisional history are correlated with the evolution of thermal structure: the African paleomargin was deformed at the onset of collision just after the obduction of the oceanic crust. After these initial stages, progressive stacking affected more and more external domains of the European plate. Lastly, the deformation of the entire pile is linked to the thermal reequilibration of the considered thickened crust. The Alpine chain is a good example of a collision zone where the interaction of thermal and mechanical effects can be treated quantitatively.
