Between 100 and 160 km, the atmosphere is neither uniformly mixed nor in diffusive equilibrium. In particular, molecular oxygen O2 is dissociated into atomic oxygen at these levels. Several models have been developed for calculating compositional variations as part of the thermospheric general circulation. Dickinson and Ridley (1972, 1975) have found that the feedback of computational variations on atmospheric dynamics is important in a study of the thermosphere of Venus. The present investigation has the objective to examine the effects of incorporating similar interactive compositional variations into a three-dimensional global circulation model for the terrestrial thermosphere.
