A simplified heuristic model is developed which describes the effect of thermoluminescence in silicates (e.g., olivine, feldspar, and pyroxene), which are present in materials of cosmic origin, such as meteorites. An equation is derived which relates the emission intensity to the heating temperature. The astrophysical implications of the phenomenon are discussed, and the results of preliminary laboratory experiments are reported.
