Eleven synthetic melilites of seven different compositions on the gehlenite-akermanite solid solution join were subjected to enthalpy of solution measurements at 970 K in molten Pb2B2O5. Nearly identical results were obtained from measurements on samples crystallized from glass and by means of solid state growth from compressed oxide mixtures at 1300 C at several compositions. The kcal/mol values are shown to be in agreement with those computed from reliable phase equilibrium data involving reactions between melilites and other minerals, and thermochemical measurements on the other minerals of the reactions. Consideration of theoretical mixing entropies with the present enthalpy determinations leads to a simple Gibbs energy of mixing curve at 1000 K, which is very close to ideal binary mixing.
