The test model of the German Infrared Laboratory designed for space shuttle missions and the evaluation of the thermal balance tests are described. This model was shortened compared to the flight unit and sealed for evacuation. Discrepancies around 50 % between measured and calculated He-flow rates were encountered. A 144 mode model was established, yielding agreement between measured and calculated He-flow rates for telescope cooling. For further improvement of the analytical tool, model data were adjusted according to temperatures measured during five different equilibrium conditions. The deviations between measured and calculated temperatures are reduced from 36K to 4K. Several measures are suggested to reduce the comsumption. Calculations show that these measures increase the operational lifetime by a factor of about two.
