Thermal ion measurements by an instrument flown as part of the Lagopedo Uno rocket experiment conducted to artificially deplete the ion concentration in the F layer ionosphere over Hawaii are presented. The device measured relative ion densities and directionality, and the depletion was achieved by detonating an explosive charge which released 10 to the 27th power molecules of H2O, with lesser amounts of NO and CO2. The O2(+) and O(+) concentrations and velocities were measured at various distances from the explosion site and time periods after detonation, and the behavior of O(+) compared favorably with predictions from a simple spherical diffusion mode of H2O. These measurements of ion composition and depleted region growth pattern are in general agreement with theoretical descriptions of such events.
